Stunning and serene, the Reservoirs Tottiford, Trenchford and Kennick are a beautiful, peaceful place for a tree-covered walk around still waters with your little ones.
Tottiford Reservoir is an easy, flat circular walk which offers a shorter route half way round – so a perfect option for if little legs start to tire. From then you can see how they would do with the longer loops of Trenchford and Kennick or even link them together like a figure of eight. These reservoirs are definitely a new favourite – it is just so calm and beautiful (on the wet summer day we went). The trees provide perfect shade from hot sunshine or the miserable British rain and the snow tends to stay for longer than elsewhere. There are many different elements of nature to enjoy and talk about on the walk, such as bird life and beautiful bluebells in the spring and rhododendrons in the summer. The waterside and surrounding woodland paths are well-trodden but there are lots of protruding tree roots so it’s only suitable for little ones in slings or confident walkers – not buggy friendly.
According to VisitDartmoor.co.uk Channel 4s Time Team visited in August 2010 (screening in February 2011) and there were prehistoric remains on the site ‘including stone rows and a stone circle. The reservoir was drained to enable the team to do this, so there is only the water to look at now, but you can let your imagination wonder at Dartmoor’s own ‘Atlantis’ hidden beneath the icy calm.’
Just so you know there is no mobile signal at the reservoirs. Please, no walking round here for anyone close to a due date!
