Theatre edition.  Summer 2023: What’s on for Kids in Devon

I love sharing a passion of mine and taking my children to the theatre and a love that they love it too! Children’s theatre is so good now – you’ll love it too! There’s loads on locally in Devon this summer holiday so choose one of these performances as a great treat and have a wonderful time.

15th July: Dragons and Mythical Beasts, Theatre Royal Plymouth, 11, 2, 4:30, £15.50, 3+, Ages 3+. Calling all brave heroes! Enter into a magical world of myths and legends in this fantastical new show for all the family.

26th July: The Amazing Bubble Man, Exeter Northcott Theatre, 11:30 & 2:30pm, £16.50, All ages, 60 mins. Louis explores the breath-taking dynamics of bubbles, combining comedy and artistry with audience participation and enough spellbinding bubble tricks to keep everyone mesmerized. From square bubbles, bubbles inside bubbles, fog-filled bubbles, giant bubbles, bubble volcanoes, tornados and trampolines to people inside bubbles, the Amazing Bubble Man conjures shrieks of laughter and gasps of amazement from all ages.

21st – 29th July: Shrek the Musical, Theatre Royal Plymouth, 1pm, 2pm, 5:30pm, 7pm, £30-48, A perfect night out for the young, and the young at heart, the award-winning Shrek the Musical is guaranteed fun for all ages and will have you dancing in the aisles and laughing all the way home.

22nd July – 5th August: Tamara, Stiltskin Theatre Company, 90 mins with interval, All ages. Tamara is an Earth Nymph. She is supposed to live underground with her Royal Family the King and Queen of the Gnomes; until one day she finds her way to the surface and discovers the whole new world of Dartmoor, which is steeped in stories, adventure and danger. On her travels Tamara meets two Giant brothers, Tavy and Tawrage and her fate is sealed. Join us for this epic storytelling adventure, be pixie-led, meet Demon Dogs, Fae Folk and Giants, and be enchanted by Tamara, her love for life and what happens to her when her father, the King, loses his temper.

12th August: Out of the Deep Blue, Exeter Phoenix – Theatre in the Park – Northernhay Gardens, 11:30 & 2:30pm, £10 & £5 under 25s, 85 mins including interval, All Ages. Through dance, movement and masterful puppeteering, Out of the Deep Blue dives into the themes of the climate emergency and the biodiversity crisis in an outdoor spectacle featuring a 13-foot-tall Puppet operated by 5 world-class puppeteers and contemporary dancers. The show has been designed with children and family audiences in mind, and this magical story about the power of empathy and collaboration between these two beings – an ancient creature, a dispirited teen – speaks to the world at large. 

18th – 20th August: The Tiger who Came to Tea, Exeter Northcott Theatre, 11am, 1:30pm, 4pm, £17.50, 55 mins. Age 3+. A Olivier Award nominated, musical play adapted based on the book by Judith Kerr. Join the tea-guzzling tiger in this delightful family show; packed with oodles of magic, sing-a-long songs and clumsy chaos. Don’t miss this stunning stage adaptation of the classic tale of teatime mayhem… expect to be surprised!

22nd -23rd August: Disney’s Winnie The Pooh, Exeter Northcott Theatre, 11am, 2pm, 5pm, £20-27.50, Children under 16 £2 off, 80 mins no interval, Age 2+. Disney’s iconic Winnie the Pooh, Christopher Robin and their best friends Piglet, Eeyore, Kanga, Roo, Rabbit, and Owl (oh… and don’t forget Tigger too!) have come to life in a beautifully crafted musical stage adaptation.  This beautiful fresh stage adaptation is told with stunning life-sized puppetry through the eyes of the characters we all know and love, in a new story from the Hundred Acre Wood.
