PYO Strawberries in Devon 2020

The strawberry fields are open! There are safety measures in place to adhere to social distancing rules, but the same wonderful experience of picking juicy, red (or green if your toddler doesn’t quite get the concept!) strawberries and other fruits in the beautiful Devon countryside. Such a wonderful outdoor activity to do with the little ones (of all ages).

This year most facilities at the Farm shops are closed so take a picnic! We have included a couple of picnic spots, but if you know of any others please do get in touch so we can add it to the listing.

Have fun and don’t forget to tag us in any pics – love seeing the excited smiles that strawberry picking brings!

Lifton Strawberry Fields

We have put much thought into PYO this year and spoken to many different sources to capture the best ideas to make it work ‘safely and responsibly’. We are fortunate that it is in an outdoor setting and we have plenty of space for people to social distance at the correct gap. Please see below some simple measures that we have put into place.

  • There will be a dedicated hand wash station near the field entrance for people to wash their hands BEFORE they enter the field – this is essential.
  • Social distancing measures should always be adhered to with a gap between people of 2m.
  • With the large amount of space in the field, this should be easily achieved.
  • If we need to, we are going to limit the number of people that can enter the field at busy times. All fruit must be thoroughly washed before eating.

Price: PYO will be priced per punnet this year and you will need to purchase your punnets BEFORE you enter the field.

1kg punnet – £7.50
2.5kg punnet – £15.00

Early/late bird offer – purchase your punnets between 8am – 10.30am and 3.30pm – 5pm you will receive them at a discounted rate
(1kg punnet – £6.00 and 2.5kg punnet – £12.50).

YOU DO NOT NEED TO BOOK FOR THIS ACTIVITY – YOU JUST TURN UP – OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK.  Just come to the shop entrance where you will see the instructions.

Sorry, no dogs allowed in the field.

Remember, this is an activity that lasts approximately 5-6 weeks only – don’t miss it!

Thorne’s Farm Shop

Our PYO is open!

We have implemented the following procedures and rules to ensure you and the Thornes team are kept safe from Covid-19

  • All children must stay with a responsible adult at all times.
  • There will be a one way system operating around the PYO field. Please don’t overtake and do keep a least 2 metres from pickers in other groups.
  • Thornes PYO boxes must be used, not containers from home.
  • Customers must register with farm shop staff before entering the PYO fields. During busy times there may be a queue to enter the PYO fields and to weigh and pay.
  • This year, customers should not eat the fruit while picking. We advise the fruit is taken home and washed before eating.
  • There will be a ‘Weigh and Pay’ station just for PYO next to the farm shop. We would prefer card payment.

Price: £5.49 a kilo.

Picnic spot: Drive out of Thornes back to the main road. Go straight over and when at the top of the hill there is a car park on the left. Take your picnic and enjoy the panoramic views of glorious countryside.

Royal Oak Farm

Royal Oak Farm is under new ownership but the fabulous PYO is still a key feature in the diary (and pumpkins featuring too this year in October – look out for Little Devon’s pumpkin picking post later in the year).

Due to the current situation with Covid-19, the tearoom is currently closed. However we are now offering a Royal Oak Farm take away ‘Cream tea in a box’ – freshly baked scones, homemade strawberry jam and Devon clotted cream. Gluten free scones are also available. Please order online here allowing 48 hours ahead of collecting.

Due to Covid, we’ve had to close the loos and we’re not allowing picnics on site this year.

Price: Strawberries £5.50 per kg (Pre picked available to order online at £4.50 a punnet (500g))

Picnic spot: Stockland has a lovely big field by the village hall which is good for a run around and a picnic (there is a play park there too when it re-opens), or there are public footpaths accessible from our farm where picnicking might be possible. Beaches are 20 mins away too.
