Lifton Farm Shop Pumpkin Fest week
Saturday 20th to Sunday 28th October 9-5
Gone are the summer strawberries and now Lifton Farm shop is dedicated to eleventythousand pumpkins. A spectacular sight with pumpkins adorning hanging baskets, dens made of pumpkins, tractors with trailers full of pumpkins, not to mention the actual areas for picking – the growing fields and the pumpkin patches with endless rows of the little orange things. Lifton really do know a thing or two about fantastic displays – they won Gold and Platinum for that spectacular, massive display of ‘Peter Rabbit at Lifton Farm Shop’ stand at 2018 Devon County Show – wow what a sight!
Head along during half term – Saturday 20th to Sunday 28th October , grab a wheelbarrow and let the fun begin. Wheelbarrow rides, or letting the little one in charge of the chariot – it’s your call, but soon it will be filled with pumpkins of all shapes and sizes ready for carving, eating or displaying. Head over for a weighing/measuring for the final price (pumpkins start from just £1). A timetable of pumpkin themed events will keep you well and truly entertained (some have charges) including Spookley the Square pumpkin Film, the Maize Maze which is still standing, pumpkin carving sessions, pumpkin magic shows, a bouncy castle and the fantastic ride on the pumpkin tractor trailer. There is a fancy dress competition too so let the kids choose their outfits all in the name of Halloween!
To continue the day, enjoy the great food at the restaurant/café which, along with the Farm shop, won Gold for South West Café/Tea Room in the Taste of the West 2017. “This farm shop café is fantastic and is full of fabulous food – most of it is grown on the farm. The staff are all really knowledgeable and efficient, and the café itself is well lit and nicely decorated.” Shop for ingredients for dinner and gifts in the farm shop and, before heading back in the car, let the little ones enjoy the play park, if they haven’t already.
Lifton also host a fantastic fireworks evening on Wednesday 31st October with proceeds going to BBC Children in Need.

From mid-October 11-5pm
Not as large or as well publicised, but Shute Fruit and Produce is a family-run farm by farm by Lori Reich and David Lamboll, who also grow pumpkins that are ready for picking generally by mid-October. October hours are 11-5 but is closed when wet as there are no buildings (including toilets) available for the public – so come dressed for the weather (and with an empty bladder)!
Shute Farm is a working farm so has lots of space for little ones to stretch their legs, tractors to watch (but not to ride on), and picnic benches for you to enjoy a snack or lunch brought from home. On a sunny day Shute Fruit and Produce pick your own farm is a glorious place to spend an hour or two with your little one or family. Arguably the prettiest pick your own in Devon, it boasts views of boats bobbing along the Teign estuary and you might even be fortunate enough to see the choo choo of the Flying Scotsman chugging past, all from the pick your own fields.
Prices of pumpkins range from 50p up to £5. A range of squashes such as Harlequin, Crown Prince and Kabocha are also available.
Well behaved dogs are welcome, but not amongst the fruit and vegetables.
