Pumpkin Picking is so much more than just choosing a pumpkin, it’s a fab day – we spend hours on the patch finding the biggest, the smallest, the great looking ones and loading them all into the barrow… then, at the end, we decide on our favourite ones to take home. What’s on for Kids this October
1st October – 2nd November: The Donkey Sanctury’s Haunted Hay Bales Halloween Hunt, Our Halloween Neddies* are back just in time for our new activity trail. Combine family fun, exercise and brainpower for just £5 per trail, including a prize when you complete the trail. Head to the Gift Shop to pick up a trail sheet and you’re ready to take on the haunted hay bales. Plus with a new play area, daily talks, scenic walks, engaging exhibits, award-winning gardens and, of course, hundreds of adorable donkeys to meet, there’s so much to explore with your own herd, whatever the weather.
21 – 29th October: Halloween at Cofton: Visitors can get crafty in a pumpkin carving workshop, become a ghoulish goblin with face painting and dress to impress with a fancy dress competition. End a fun-packed day with a family feast of delicious Devon delicacies, served up alongside the eerie evening entertainment: dancing, music and live entertainment from the Cofton Crew on an adventure to the underworld.
7, 14, 21 & 28th October: Botanical Pressed Flower Pumpkins at Amelia’s Flower Farm. Children most definitely welcome, come inside to out workshop area upstairs. All pumpkins and equipment provided £10 for a mini pumpkin and £15 for a medium.
15th October: Cockington Apple Day 2023, 11am-4pm, A traditional apple press on the front lawn will be the star attraction with demonstrators turning apples into juice and describing how to transform the juice into delicious homemade scrumpy. Visitors are welcome to use apples gathered from Cockington Court’ orchard or can bring their own apples for pressing, for a small donation. There are plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy including: arts and crafts, live music, drumming workshops, an apple themed treasure hunt, a baking competition, horse and carriage rides, and over 30 market stalls selling food, drinks and crafts. For those wanting a bite to eat, hot and cold food will be available all day from the Seven Dials Café and a wide range of local cider and beer will be on offer from local traders.
19 October: Little Devon Pumpkin Picking Meet up and Photoshoot. 10-12 or 12:30-2:30. I’m organising this one and I can’t wait. Getting outside with our cosy autumnal knits and having fun with our Little Ones all while the professional photographer, Emily Fleur, captures the beautiful memories. Includes all the gorgeous digital photos.
19 October – 1st November: Spooktacular visit to Bear Town. Alongside a fang-tastic two-hour play session, all children will be invited to take part in a Halloween hunt, around the Town, to locate the missing wicked bats! The bat hunt will take place 30 minutes before the end of your session.
21- 29th October: Pumpkin Trail at Heron Farm. Throughout the October half-term, join us for our Pumpkin Trail and gather an Autumn harvest of happy memories navigating your way around Heron Farm to find the hidden Pumpkins, each with a clue to the mystery word! Heron Farm are also hosting NatureMake fairy workshop 27th and Girlbehindthelens for a family photoshoot in the vines.
21-29th October: Halloween at Ullacombe Farm. Whether you’ve got an outdoor adventurer, creative crafter, a born performer, or even a little train enthusiast in the family. Or maybe you’ve just had enough and want to tire the kids out on some inflatables for a few hours – Ullacombe farm has it all! Pumpkin hunts, Inflatables Stay & Play, Trainplay, Made for the Stage
21-31st October: Witch of Wildwood, During the spookiest season of the year, come and experience a ghoulishly great day out exploring the spine-tingling ancient woodland and getting up close British wildlife past and present, including bears, wolves and wild boar! There’ll be a chance to learn more about some of our spookiest animals with daily talks from Wildwood’s team of experts. Those that dare to venture into Wildwood will also be pumpkin trails with prizes, pumpkin carving and ghoulish arts and crafts. Wicked “Winfred” will be imparting her wisdom on some brave young witches and wizards and showing them how to create potions and craft their own wands.
22-29th October: Family Activites & Events at Bridwell Park Estate. Pop up Craft workshops with Pom Stitch Tassel, Pop up Pottery Painting with Happy Glaze Pottery, Nature Treasure Hunts & Crown making, Nature trail.
23-28th October: King Arthur at Exeter Northcott Theatre, The Kings of Comedy, Le Navet Bete, return to the stage with a brand-new comedy for the ages. This hilarious retelling of the Arthurian legends, suitable for the whole family, will have audiences crying with laughter and become part of the legend themselves!
24th October: Rocking out with cave art, RAMM Museum Exeter, Jump into the wonderful world of cave art, inspired by RAMM’s Hollow Earth exhibition. Cave art is like a picture book that people made a long time ago. They drew pictures of animals that they hunted and other things that they saw in their world. They used rocks, charcoal, animal blood, and berries to make the paint. They painted on the walls of caves and many pictures are still there today—we can learn a lot about how people lived a long time ago by looking at them. We’ll be turning our Courtyard into a cave-like grotto where you can come along and add your own pictures to our ‘cave wall’, and create your own mini piece of rock art to take home with you.

25th October: Mythical Monsters, RAMM Museum Exeter, Inspired by RAMM’s new Hollow Earth exhibition, dive into the weird and wild world of underground monsters, caves and ancient myths. Join author, TV presenter and Ancient Worlds expert Jasmine Elmer as she leads us on a literary adventure into the realm of the legendary Minotaur. After a retelling of the story we’ll explore the meaning behind the myth and discuss the underground world of the Labyrinth. We’ll meet other creatures such as the Chimera and Typhon whose incredible powers are said to be linked to volcanic activity. After a short break to search for inspiration from the museum’s collections, get hands on and create your own mythical monster from clay to take home.
31 October: Halloween at Holwell: Hold onto your witches hats and get ready for a spine-tingling Halloween night at Holwell – 5-7:30pm! Witness an epic display of 8 large bird of prey in flight along with The Stoggymen and enough immersive entertainment to give you goosebumps! Trick or treat your tast buds without ghoulishly delightful refreshments.
