October 2022: Things to do with Kids in Devon

Autumn has truly hit, and there’s lots on to help us get out and enjoy our time with our Little ones.

Pumpkin Picking: so much more than just choosing a pumpkin, it’s a fab day – we spend hours on the patch finding the biggest, the smallest, the great looking ones and loading them all into the barrow… then, at the end, we decide on our favourite ones to take home. 30th July – 31st October: Cockington Court Sculpture Trail 2022 – Insects Descend! Free Entry Art and culture enthusiasts, families and children all love exploring the trail, hunting for diverse sculptures dotted around the Manor House and grounds. Trail maps will be made available from the Visitor Welcome Point in the Manor House from 30 July.

16th October: Cockington Apple Day 2022, 11am-4pm, A traditional apple press on the front lawn will be the star attraction with demonstrators turning apples into juice and describing how to transform the juice into delicious homemade scrumpy. Visitors are welcome to use apples gathered from Cockington Court’ orchard or can bring their own apples for pressing, for a small donation. There are plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy including: arts and crafts, live music, drumming workshops, an apple themed treasure hunt, a baking competition, horse and carriage rides, and over 30 market stalls selling food, drinks and crafts. For those wanting a bite to eat, hot and cold food will be available all day from the Seven Dials Café and a wide range of local cider and beer will be on offer from local traders.

18th October: Pumpkin Picking Meet up and Photoshoot. 9:30-11:30. I’m organising this one and I can’t wait. Getting outside with our cosy autumnal knits and having fun with our Little Ones all while the professional photographer, Emily Fleur, captures the beautiful memories. Includes 10 gorgeous digital photos from a professional photographer.

22-30th October: Deadliest plants and bugs, RHS Rosemoor Discover how clever creepy-crawlies and super-smart plants fight back with a week of fun family activities at RHS Garden Rosemoor. There’s also craft workshops, pumpkin painting & Exmoor Zoo shows for an extra charge.

24th October: Dinosaurs and all that Rubbish, Exeter Phoenix 11am, 2pm, An imaginative adaptation of Michael Foreman’s environmental tale with dancing dinosaurs, fuelled by rock’n’roll. This riotous hour, packed with signature Roustabout silliness, will have you tapping your toes from start to finish! Age 3+

24th & 26 October: Family Bat Walks, Dartington Trust, 10.30-12.30pm | 2.30-4.30pm, £3.50, no ticket for under 2s, Join us for some fun family nature activities and discover some secrets about the bats that live on our medieval estate with Mark from our conservation team. Experience what it’s like a be a bat catching its food, and learn more about these fascinating creatures! Pram Accessible.

25th October: Archie’s Apple Picture Book launch, Exeter Waterstones bookshop, 3pm. Free. Story-time and fun apple-drawing activity for children. Archie’s Apple is a beautiful, full-colour, hard-back picture book, illustrated by Octavia Mackenzie, and written by Hannah Shuckburgh, about a little boy who discovers a new variety of apple while playing in woodland. It’s inspired by a true story: Hannah’s husband, Archie Thomas, really did discover a new variety of apple while walking in the West Country in 2020 (his discovery was featured in newspapers all over the world). Archie’s Apple is aimed at children aged 3 to 9.

25th October: The Amazing Bubble Man, Exeter Northcott, 2pm, Louis explores the breathtaking dynamics of bubbles, combining comedy and artistry with audience participation and enough spellbinding bubble tricks to keep everyone mesmerized. From square bubbles, bubbles inside bubbles, fog-filled bubbles, giant bubbles, bubble volcanoes, tornados and trampolines to people inside bubbles, the Amazing Bubble Man conjures shrieks of laughter and gasps of amazement from all ages.

26th October: Spooky Bath Bomb Making, LUSH Plymouth, We are making the terrifyingly terrific Punkin Pumpkin, priced at £5 each! Make your very own Lush Bath Bomb fragranced with Cinnamon, Lime and Mandarin and a dash of Pumpkin Powder.

26th October: Muddifords Court Pumpkin Trail & Let’s Carve out some fun event. Exmoor Zoo will visit Muddifords Court with their creepy crawlies there will also be face painting, autumnal crafts and our favourite pumpkin carving.

26 & 27 October: Apple Picking Event, The Lost Kitchen, Many hands make light work! We’re looking for families, friends & children to help us pick the apples from our orchards. In exchange for our bounty pickers we’re offering some of our delicious wood fired pizzas and a fun day in the autumnal weather and our beautiful countryside! You’ll need your own transport to take part as our orchards locations are rural.

27th October: The Body Show, RAMM Museum, £5 pp, Disgusting digestion from top to bottom! Step inside the fabulous Explorer Dome and embark on a ikcy, yucky and totally gross journey inside the human body! Join us for a hands-on journey to discover food groups and teeth and then head down the oesophagus to take a look at the form and function of your digestive system. Experience ingestion, digestion, absorption and egestion from plate to poo!

27th October: Devon Mamas GreenDale Meet up. Devon Mamas Meet Ups are designed with local Mamas & Mamas-to-be in mind (Dads are welcome too). Don’t get me wrong we love a baby class, but how many times have you finished a course of baby classes and realised that you don’t know the name of the mum you’ve been sat next to for the past six weeks? 

29th October: BAMoween, Broomhill Estate, Muddiford, 12am till 12pm, Artisan traders selling a selection of stunning local produce. Silent disco around the haunted house, Spooky scavenger hunt around the sculpture park, Family fright fest – Midday – 6pm.

29th October: Spooky Science, The Box, 5:30-8:30pm. Get your tricks and treats at The Box this Halloween at our special family late! Explore our galleries by torchlight, perform a science experiment in our Learning Room, dance away to some spooky tracks and don’t forget to wear your best Halloween outfit.

29th & 30th October: Room on the Broom, Exeter Northcott, 11am, 1pm, 4:30pm, I love these book adaptations – they’re a really great way for children to enjoy the theatre and understand the narrative. Jump on board the broom with the witch and her cat in Tall Stories’ fun-filled adaptation of Room on the Broom, the best-selling picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. The witch and her cat are travelling on their broomstick when they pick up some hitch-hikers – a friendly dog, a beautiful green bird and a frantic frog. But this broomstick’s not meant for five and – CRACK – it snaps in two… just as the hungry dragon appears! Olivier Award-nominated show for everyone aged 3 and up.

30th October: Apple Fete, The Lost Kitchen, All things Cider and Apple.

31st October: Shorting Hat & Magic Show, Guildhall Exeter, Free, Book your spot and get sorted by the Sorting Hat or book a seat in the wizardry theatre to witness the magic and marvels of the Magic Show!
