Fernworthy Reservoir

The mirror reflections of the fir trees and the water cascading down the damn are simply stunning. A lovely walk.

A beautiful walk around the reservoir. Mostly flat with a variety of areas to walk along to keep little eyes interested: the reservoir, the damn, woods, bracken.

The walk is perfect for a sling walk and doable for preschoolers and older to complete. The loop is not pram or wheelchair friendly, but according to swlakes there is “a lakeside wheelchair and buggy accessible route of about ¾ mile, forming part of a 2.6 mile circular route that showcases the best that Fernworthy Reservoir has to offer.” (if you try it out please do let me know what you think – I’d love to include more accessible routes on here)

Fernworthy Reservoir gravity feeds into Trenchford Reservoir and supplies Torquay with drinking water. The reservoir holds up to 380 million gallons of water, and was completed in 1942.

Just so you know there is intermittent mobile signal at the reservoirs.

Picnic Spots and Closest Cafes

There are benches at the very start of the walk what3 words: scout.spike.helpfully. We tend to save our picnic for after we’ve done a bit of walking and enjoyed it on the westerly point of the reservoir – what3words:spends.constrain.talkative.

Another time we have bought something yummy from the Shepard’s hut.

MoorishMoments are open Wednesday to Sunday from 10 – 4 at Fernworthy Reservoir.
