February 2023: What’s on for kids in Devon

Another round up of what’s on this February including February Half term holiday. Lots of theatre and exciting indoor events for when the weather is meugh! If it’s not, then check out my favourite walks here. Have fun, and as always, I’d love to be tagged in pics. B x

1st- 27th February: Gaia by Luke Jerram, Adults – £5, Under 18s – Free, Following Luke Jerram’s hugely successful Museum of the Moon installation at Exeter Cathedral in February 2022 we are delighted to be hosting the artist’s next artwork, Gaia, throughout February 2023. Measuring seven metres in diameter and suspended inside the nave of Exeter Cathedral, Gaia features high-resolution NASA imagery of Earth’s surface* and specially-composed surround sound by BAFTA award-winning composer, Dan Jones.

5th – 8th February: Room on the Broom, Theatre Royal, Plymouth, £16.00 (Concessions £14.00), 55 mins (no interval), 3+, Relaxed (BSL & AD) – Wed 08 Feb 2023 at 11:00, Jump on board the broom with the witch and her cat in Tall Stories’ fun-filled adaptation of Room on the Broom, the best-selling picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.

10th – 22nd February: Valentines at Bear Town is the perfect way to share the love with your little ones. Join us for a two-hour play session in our lovely Town, during which your little ones can take part in our special Love Heart Hunt, with a little sweet treat reward! 

11th – 19th February: February half term at Rosemoor: World on your windowsill, I love Rosemoor and even more so at half-terms and holidays as there’s always some fun extra entertainment for the little ones. This February there’s a: self-led trail, World of bubbles with Captain Coconut, Build your own marimo pet terrarium, Make a beautiful sun catcher, bean-germinating experiments, or create your very own edible window box for your windowsill. Some activities you have to pay an extra £2.50 per child.

13th – 16th February: Everything has changed, Exeter Phoenix, Giveaway of a family ticket on Little Devon instagram on Thursday 2nd Feb. A joyful, kaleidoscopic new family show about change, why change happens – and how to deal with it. The world has ever so slightly shifted. Things are… different, skewed, off kilter and no one else has noticed. Time feels strange and no one day is the same. Wait. Was that an actual zebra crossing the zebra crossing? Join us for this fast-moving and physical adventure about the chaos of the last few years – allowing young people to take stock and share their hopes for the future.

Sunday 12th February: Big Fish Little Fish Family Rave, 11am – 1pm & 2pm – 4pm, Adults £6, children £6 and pre-walking infants FREE (but must be ticketed). Theme: “Peace ’n’ Love” – Optional (but encouraged) fancy dress. Award-winning family rave crew Big Fish Little Fish return to Torquay for another massive afternoon of bonkers raving with the kids – this time at the mighty Torquay Museum! Yes, a rave for families IN A MUSEUM! Headline DJs are the BFLF South West residents Little My & High Eight who’ll be playing (grown-up) dance music on the multi-sensory dancefloor with glitter cannons, bubbles, snow, balloons and giant parachute dance. Craft tables and giant colouring mural, themed crafts and playdoh table. Play area with tents and tunnels and baby chillout space with mats and small ballpool. Licensed bar and free transfer tattoos.

Tuesday 14th February: Operation Earth, RAMM, 10.30am, 1pm and 2.30pm, Free – book ticket. Earthy is feeling a little under the weather and is going to the doctors for a check-up. Join Exeter Science Centre, along with expert scientists, as we investigate what is bothering Earthy. Become a trainee environmental scientist and help us investigate Earthy’s land, air and oceans, and see if together we can find solutions.

Wednesday 15th February: Kids Cookery 10am – 4pm, £36, Winter Warmers, Get cooking on the farm at our Cookery School! Each month there will be a new theme to get the kids involved in picking and cooking new dishes to try and impress you at home!

Wednesday 15th February: Magical Miniature Den workshop, RAMM, 10.30am-1pm & 1.30-3.30pm, Drop-in, £5 per child. Come and create your own special miniature ‘den’ inspired by nature in this wonderful artist-led workshop. Using an incredible array of natural, foraged materials you will be the dreamer, the designer and the maker. Imagine yourself in a wild landscape (it could be a meadow, a woodland, a forest or a river island – wherever you like) and imagine you are tiny, about the size of your thumb! You need a shelter; your very own little den. Somewhere you feel safe and content, connected to the natural world around you.

Tuesday – Sunday 14th – 19th February: The Smartest Giant in Town, Exeter Northcott, 10:30am, 01:30pm, 04:30pm, £16.50 (Children U16 £2 off) 50 minutes, Age guidance: 3+, George wishes he wasn’t the scruffiest giant in town. So when he sees a new shop selling giant-sized clothes, he decides it’s time for a new look: smart trousers, smart shirt, stripy tie, shiny shoes. Now he’s the smartest giant in town… until he bumps into some animals who desperately need his help – and his clothes! We love these Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler theatre adaptations – they’re always fab and a perfect theatre introduction for our little ones.

Thursday 16th February: Explorer Dome: The Earth and Environment Show, RAMM, 10.30-11.30am; 11.30am-12.30pm; 1.30-2.30pm; 2.30-3.30pm, £5 per ticket (children must be accompanied by a paying adult). The fabulous Explorer Dome returns to RAMM for another exciting adventure. Calling all explorers! Let’s travel into the rainforest, across a desert and then up to the North Pole to discover how different environments on Earth might feel and how different animals can live in these wonderful places.

Friday 17th February: Word Play Saves the Planet, Positive Lights Project, Exeter. 10 – 12 or 1- 3. A free family event for children of primary age to engage with stories, literacy and more. We love going to these. Loads of craft and fun that is perfect for our children. It’s such a lovely event, great for all ages, that is completely free – but do book a ticket as it fills up. We have spent most of the day there before with my children engrossed in the craft or storytelling.
