There’s something magical and exciting about seeing all the Christmas lights switch on for the first time against the dark night’s sky. Here’s a listing of all (I think) of Devon’s Christmas Lights Switch On events this year.

Plymouth Christmas Lights switch on 2022

Thursday 17 November
Entertainment from 4pm

Switch on between 6 – 6:30pm

Plymouth’s Christmas holiday calendar officially kicks off with the switch-on of the Christmas lights on Thursday 17 November, supported by Morgan Sindall Construction. It also marks the start of festive late night shopping every Thursday in the lead up to Christmas. Don’t miss the big switch-on moment, which is due to take place between 6pm and 6.30pm!

There will be an exciting programme of free, family-friendly entertainment to enjoy on stage in the Piazza from 4pm. Enjoy live music, with performances of carols and popular Christmas songs from local groups and choirs.

Exeter Christmas lights switch on 2022

Thursday 17 November 2022 –
No public event this year so no official switch on time.

Saturday 26th November 2022
6pm – 8pm

The lights will be on for the beginning of the Christmas market but no official switch on. However the Exeter Carnival is set to be great.

This November we are proud to be hosting an illuminated carnival in the heart of Exeter. This event will celebrate Exeter as a city and all that is great about it and bring communities together. Join us for a night of festivities in the city with a parade including light up acts, floats and bands.

South Molton Christmas Lights switch-on, South Molton Pannier Market

Friday 18th November
5pm-8pm

Welcome the start of the festive season with the Christmas Light Switch On in South Molton. Meet Father Christmas, Festive mini golf, Kids rides & inflatables, street food, Community Rock Choir & Soundwave Radio.

Christmas Comes to Broadclyst

Friday 18 November

Ticketed event

This is a ticketed event which will include…

  • Story time and meeting Father Christmas in small groups. All children will receive a gift. Please choose a time slot when booking.
  • A range of Christmas craft activities will be running all evening in the main hall, so please feel free to arrive and join in with these anytime from 4.30pm until 6.30pm.
  • Drinks and snacks are included for all of the family to enjoy and the bar next door at the social club will also be open and welcoming people in for a cold drink or glass of mulled wine.
  • Fox King Dance Academy will be treating us to a ballet performance on the main stage from 6.30pm.
  • The lovely Jess from Perspectives Photography will be there on the night to offer professional family Christmas photos.
  • In order to try and maximise the number of children able to enjoy the event, and due to the number limitations of the venue, we need to limit the number of adults attending the event to 1, or 2 maximum per family.
  • Only 1 adult will be allowed in for the story session per family. An additional adult can join in with the activities in the hall but please note the above; we need to limit the number of adults attending to 1, or 2 maximum per family.
  • Child tickets are £4 and adults are free. This is payable on the night, cash only. Please bring exact money if possible.

At 7pm we invite everyone to join us outside, where the choir will be performing and the Christmas Light Switch On will commence!

Torquay Christmas lights switch-on 2022

Saturday 19 November
There will be no big celebrity “switch on”, as the lights will appear when each trader switches on their lights.

Come and experience a great day in Torquay town centre.
There will be no big celebrity “switch on”, as the lights will appear when each trader switches on their lights, no specific time is given.  Once lit the town centre Christmas lights will stay lit for six weeks – 24 hours a day

Plymouth Barbican Lights Switch-on 2022

Saturday 19th November
12pm-6pm Switch on 5:30

Join us on Saturday 19 November 2022 on the Barbican and Sutton Harbour, for the wonderful Christmas lights switch-on, sponsored by PL1 Events, with an afternoon of festive family fun with free activities, rides and entertainment from 12pm to 6pm.

Performances

Children can visit Santa in his grotto from 12pm to 4.30pm and give him a wave as he travels across the water on the RNLI boat. Families can soak up the festive joy of the amazing local choirs and dance groups as they perform on The Parade and Southside Street throughout the afternoon. There will be performaces from: North Prospect Community Choir, Blokes Who Sing, Devonport Park Community Choir, PGS Theatre, SA Singing and Acting, Grace Notes Acapella, SJ Performing Arts, Savannah Shepherd, LS Drama Workshops, The Groovement Project, Plymouth Panthers Cheer Squad, Dance Fusion, Stevie Jay, Natasha’s Bollywood Dance, Razzmataz, Italia Conti, Simara Winter and Plymouth Performing Arts Academy.

Christmas activities

There will be Christmas-themed street performers and stilt walkers, including a very cute baby reindeer and the mischievous Grinch!  Children can enjoy the Christmas Fairy’s storytelling with hot chocolate at The Maritime Inn at 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm, plus free face painting and rides to have a go on too, including the snow globe, rodeo reindeer and a paddleboard simulator!

Get creative

If you enjoy getting creative, then head up to the Barbican Theatre for some Christmas tree decoration making and children’s glitter craft activities. There will be a selection of stalls on The Parade selling some delicious festive refreshments and gifts and see the sea themed Christmas tree provided by Bogey Knights.

Festive bus and the switch on

Look out for the festive bus on Southside Street (by The Navy), which will be hosting the Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Santa and the nominated community heroes, who will be switching on the awesome sparkly Christmas lights, from approximately 5.30pm.

Santa will then take a trip on the festive bus around the waterfront, spreading his Christmas cheer, be sure to give him a wave if you see him.

Topsham The Big Switch-On & Procession

Friday 25th November
4:30pm – 6pm.

  • 4.30pm to 5pm outside Matthews Hall – stand by for action from Higher Beings Circus stilt walkers, from renowned local musician Jimmy Ireland, and from Topsham’s Town Crier Rogan Meadows. Plus the final countdown to Lights On from our very own Liz and Dave Hodges, legendary figures in our community! Remember to get a mince pie and some indulgent hot choc from Matthews Hall Cafe.
  • 5pm – The Big Switch On! Get ready for a wonderful “ooooh” and “aaahh” when you see how beautiful the lights are this year on Fore Street, High Street, Ferry Road and Topsham Quay.
  • Then from 5pm until early evening head on down to Topsham Quay for you’ve-never-seen-anything-like-it fire juggling, Christmas Carols, and a special appearance from Father Christmas (who else?).  And grab some festive fare from The Lighter Inn and Route 2 cafe, serving up a treat for the early evening. 

Dawlish Christmas Lights Switch on 2022

Friday 25th November
4:30pm – 6pm

CHRISTMAS is on its way to Dawlish. A host of events has been planned alongside the annual Christmas lights switch on. The festive fun kicks off on Friday November 25 with the lights switch on. The evening starts at 4.30pm with a lantern parade from Dawlish Bowling Club down and around the Lawn to the Bandstand. School, community and church choirs will be leading community carol singing accompanied by Torbay Brass Band. The Torbay Brass Band will play until 7pm on The Strand. Refreshments will be served by Dawlish WI with proceeds going to the Mayor’s charities.

On Saturday and Sunday, the Dawlish Christmas Market makes a return to the town with more than 55 stalls along the Strand. Father Christmas will be available on Saturday November 27 between 11.15am and 12.30pm. As well as a chance to stock up on festive gifts, there will be street entertainment and live music throughout the weekend. For children, there will be free face painting and inflatables. The three days of events have been organised by the town council to get Dawlish into the festive spirit. Dawlish Celebrates is organising the two-day street market and festive fun event for all the family. As well as stalls, there will be free face painting and free rides as well as a Scrooge and Christmas Present walkabout both days.

On Saturday November 26, Festive Foxley will be joining the event all afternoon while on the Lawn there will be Punch and Judy with choir the High Cs performing. Other entertainment will be provided by Wrecked Again, Demelza Jennings, Busker Rhymes, Jimmy Ireland, Mark Evans and the Fat Dog Duo throughout the afternoon.

On Sunday November 27, a Christmas cracker and balloon modeller will be on the Strand, along with Father Christmas himself between 11.15am and 12.30pm who will be taking part in a walkabout and photos with his troop of elves. Torbay Brass Band will be back performing through the day.

Brixham’s Lanterns Lights and illuminations

Saturday 26th November
10am – 10pm

Brixham will celebrate its Christmas Lights Switch on with a ‘Lanterns, Lights and ‘luminations’ parade.

Barnstaple Christmas lights switch-on

Thursday 1st December 2022

The Barnstaple Christmas Fayre is held on the first Thursday of December. This year the event, will coincide with the Christmas Light switch on, the carol concert and late night shopping. The Strand will be filled with local craft stalls, showcasing some of the best crafts around, the perfect opportunity to grab some extra special presents. There will be street foods, bouncy castles for the little ones, hot mulled wine, and even Santa Claus in The Mayors Parlour at The Guildhall !

Tavistock Dickensian Evening & Christmas lights switch-on 2022

Friday 2nd December
From 5pm Switch-on at 5.45pm

Tavistock’s Dickensian Evening is a magical late-night shopping event that transports you back in time as shop keepers embrace the spirit and dress up in traditional attire. Christmas light switch-on at 5:45pm. 

The smell of chestnuts cooking on steam engines will waft through the streets bringing excitement to children and adults alike. Shops will be open late, and the town will come alive with entertainment on every corner. The streets are filled with crowds who come to enjoy the old-fashioned traditional Christmas experience.   There will be stilt walkers, choirs, bands, street entertainers all performing throughout town. For children there’s an old-fashioned merry-go-round fairground ride and candy floss! 

2022 will feature: Elfic The Juggler, The Curiosity Christmas Tree, Corvus Angelicus, Terrie-Mae McNulty and Real Steel. Festive Craft, Food & Drink and gift stalls can be found around town and in Butcher’s Hall. 

Clovelly Christmas Lights in aid of the R.N.L.I.

Sunday 4th December

The residents of Clovelly are gearing up for their annual Christmas lights extravaganza in aid of the RNLI — and this year it looks set to be better than ever before.

On 4 December 2022 the village will be hosting an array of Christmas activities, beginning at 4pm with a brass band procession down the street. There will be stops along the way for Christmas carols, before a crowd gathers in the harbour for a carol service and performance from Woolsery School Choir. Afterwards, a switch will be flicked, illuminating the village with thousands of sparkling bulbs as an impressive fireworks display lights up the night sky.

Festive refreshments such as hog roast and grog will be available at the harbour and Lifeboat Station throughout, as well as food and drink at the New Inn and Red Lion Hotel. There will even be a visit from Father Christmas himself.

The Christmas lights event is organised by volunteers at Clovelly Lifeboat Station to raise money for the RNLI. In lieu of the usual entrance fee to the village, visitors are asked to make a donation of £10 per vehicle to the charity.

Bideford Christmas lights switch-on 2022
