Never before have children been so socially isolated while at the same time so connected to anyone else no matter where they are in the world. This is why I absolutely love this new initiative started locally by Tina – The Around the World Kids’ Choir. There could not be a better time for our children to start something fun, that promotes an understanding and appreciation of different cultures around the world and that can be enjoyed in person when lockdown eases.
Tina told us “I have a 5 year old and a 3 year old and live in Exeter with my husband. I love doing things that promote an appreciation of how diverse and beautiful the world and its people are as well as developing a love for difference. I do a lot of work with the University of Exeter on this and I want to provide something for children in the city which is how I ended up starting this choir. The choir is led by Fran Andre who is phenomenal!”
When so many extra-curricular activities are off the cards, this is a lovely way to connect to like-minded local families. Not to mention that studies show that choral singing improves our mood, with a decrease in stress, depression and anxiety; something we could all do with!
The choir will meet weekly for a 45 minute session – free during lockdown and ‘pay-what-you-can’ thereafter. The sessions will start with learning a song in a language from another country or culture. Then the choir will learn a little bit about that country/culture as well as an activity sent with colouring and drawing activities, including a map so the children can learn to identify the country on the map.
Tina has been fundraising to ensure the sessions can be led by the fabulous choir leader Fran. If you would like to contribute to this then head over to: https://www.gofundme.com/f/around-the-world-kids-choir…
