10 Best Books for Father’s Day

In our house, we love to give the gift of a children’s book as often as possible and Father’s day is right up there at the top of the list.

As with all these things, if you can shop local then that’s great. For books there’s your local Library – click here for Devon Libraries Unlimited website or fabulous independent book shops such as Winstone’s in Sidmouth or Crediton Community Bookshop in Credition.

But sometimes Amazon is a convenient alternative. I’ve linked all the recommendations below to Amazon (just click on the picture or the title) or go straight to my Amazon ‘shop front’ page here for a few extra titles too. All links are affiliate links. The affiliate link means I might earn a small amount if you click through and then buy the book within a certain timeframe. It has absolutely no effect on the price you pay, but it will be a little token and help me to keep creating great content for you to enjoy. Thank you so much for supporting me.

Guess How Much I Love You

I love this story (and often change the daddy to mummy when I read it!). It’s a great one about the love the child and father feel for each other; ‘I love you as high as I can jump’ the child says while jumping, and then the father jumps even higher. Our little one went through a stage of quantifying her love like this too. My favourite was ‘I love you all the way to Killerton!’

“This gorgeous picture book has become a modern classic. The story of Little Nutbrown Hare and Big Nutbrown Hare trying to express how much they love each other is one which has captivated adults and children the world over. My Dad

He may not be a superhero, or an astronaut, or a secret agent… but my dad is still the best dad in the world! From baking cookies and gardening to playing make-believe and watching the sunset, a child reveals all the simple yet wonderful things he loves to do with his dad. With lyrical rhyming text and gentle illustrations, this is a joyous celebration of fatherhood which creates a special reading experience between a child and their father. Inspire a child to explore what makes the relationships in their own life special with this touching book.”

I love Dad with the Hungry Caterpillar

“This gorgeous little gift book from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is the perfect way to say, ‘I Love You, Dad!’ Dad… you’re easy to talk to… even when I am feeling prickly… you are always there… that’s why I love you, Dad! Join The Very Hungry Caterpillar for a celebration of love and all the ways to tell your dad how much you care. This lovely little book features Eric Carle’s colourful artwork of animal dads and babies, with the Hungry Caterpillar making an appearance alongside each one. The perfect gift for Father’s Day, or any day you want to say… I love you, Dad!”

Amazing Daddy

My daddy is amazing for a thousand different reasons. He’s a year-round superhero, a daddy for all seasons! Join Little Panda and Daddy Panda as they spend the day together, sharing lots of special moments along the way. The perfect gift to share with the amazing daddy in your life! On Father’s Day, for new Dads, or at any time of the year. Rachel Bright is the author of the Lion Inside series, with over one million copies sold in more than 30 languages.”

My Dad Is A Grizzly Bear

“Shhh. Beware. My dad is a grizzly bear. In this family, it’s just possible that Dad is a grizzly bear . . . He has fuzzy fur, enormous paws and loves the outdoors. He sleeps a lot even in the cinema and when he’s awake, he’s always hungry, usually eating up all the honey. What else could Dad be? But sometimes, when it’s scary at night, a lovely big bear hug is just what is needed. A hilarious debut picture book written by Swapna Haddow author of the Dave Pigeon series and illustrated by the brilliantly talented Dapo Adeola author of Look Up!

Daddy Fartypants

“And the worst thing? Daddy Fartypants always blames someone else. But that all changes when he meets Little Bear’s lovely (and very windy) new teacher… Full of fun, farts and family … look no further for the book to share with Dad! Emer Stamp is the creator of the bestselling The Unbelievable Top Secret Diary of Pig and winner of the 2019 LOLLIES book awards.”

Peppa Pig: I love you, Daddy Pig

“But super Daddy Pig makes their day anything but ordinary by adding lots of fun and excitement to everything they do! Daddy Pig makes every day an adventure in this delightful picture book with a sparkly cover, it’s perfect for little piggies and their daddies on Father’s Day and all year round!”

My Dad

A simple and funny story comparing dad with lots of similes. We gave this one for Father’s Day a couple of years back and my daughter started to even learn it off by heart!

“My dad can wrestle with giants,
eat like a horse,
swim like a fish . . . Can yours?

A brilliant, humorous look at fatherhood from a child’s point of view, from this multi-award-winning author/illustrator.”

My Daddies

“A funny, heartfelt picture-book celebrating same-sex parents and shared story time, perfect for introducing children to the different kinds of family in the world today.

Set off on a series of incredible adventures with an adorable family as the stories they read burst into colourful life. Battle dragons, dodge deadly dinosaurs, zoom to the moon and explore the world in a hot air balloon, before winding down in a wonderfully cosy bedtime ending.

The bouncy, rhyming, read-aloud text is brought to life by bestselling, award-winning illustrator Garry Parsons, illustrator of The Dinosaur that Pooped series.”
