Strawberry Fields Pumpkin Fest week (aka Lifton Farm shop)

#liftonfarmshop  @LiftonFarmShop Lifton Farm Shop

Saturday 19th to Sunday 27th October 9-5

Pumpkin Fest 2019 – a fun filled event with PYO pumpkins, daily magic shows, pumpkin carving, maize maze and trailer rides!

Lifton Farm Shop may have a new name (Strawberry Fields) but thankfully it’s still doing everything it does best.  Pumpkin Fest week is back and once again there is plenty to be entertained by.  From the moment you drive in when you’re welcomed by the fantastic display made from oh so many pumpkins, you know you’ve made a great choice for a day out.

What’s at Pumpkin Fest?

Pumpkins (obviously!): the growing fields and the pumpkin patches have endless rows of the little orange things. Pick your favourite and use one of the many available wheelbarrows to cart them, or the kids, or both around.  Dress for muck (and for great photos, dress in Autumnal colours) it’s so much more fun that way.  Weigh/measure the pumpkin for the final price (£1.50 to £10 for the giant ones) in the marquee.

The tractor and trailer rides, although quite pricey especially if there’s a few in the family, really are fantastic.  You’re taken through the woods where the children can spot their favourite characters, some giant characters made from bales of hay and others being people in costume. It gets very exciting! The ride lasts a good while too so sit and enjoy the bouncy ride while the little ones get tremendously excited when they spot the Gruffalo, or Peter Rabbit, or go through the spooky tunnel with the spiders!

In the marquee, take part in pumpkin carving using tools available, and when you’re not pumpkin focussed, be entertained by balloon modelling, face painting, free daily family magic shows featuring Magic Martin or take part in the fancy dress competition.  See the timetable to plan your best day.

When the kids need to let off their post lunch and delicious cake sugar high, let them enjoy the play park which is perfectly placed next to the restaurant’s out door seating area where there is also has a great lawn space for the kids to run, or head over to the bouncy castle or the Maize Maze.

To continue the day, enjoy the great food at the restaurant/café which, along with the Farm shop, won Gold for South West Café/Tea Room in the Taste of the West 2017. Shop for ingredients for dinner and gifts in the farm shop and, before heading back in the car, let the little ones enjoy the play park, if they haven’t already.

Shute Fruit and Produce

#shutefruit   Shute Fruit Picking Farm

From mid-October 11-5pm

Shute Fruit and Produce is a family-run Pick Your Own farm by farm by Lori Reich and David Lamboll.  Their pumpkins and gourd-geous squashes are ready for picking generally by mid-October.  October hours are 11-5 but is closed on Mondays and rainy days as there are no buildings (including no toilets) available for the public to shelter from the wet- so come dressed for the weather (and with an empty bladder)!

Shute Farm is a working farm so has lots of space for little ones to stretch their legs, and picnic benches for you to enjoy a snack or lunch brought from home. They do serve their own refreshing elderflower cordial. On a sunny day, Shute Fruit and Produce is a glorious place to spend an hour or two with your little one or family.  Arguably, the prettiest pick your own in Devon, it boasts views of boats bobbing along the Teign estuary and you might even be fortunate enough to see the choo choo of the Flying Scotsman chugging past, all from the pick your own fields.

Lori is an expert in carving pumpkins and can help with hints for safe fun with jack o lanterns.  She has plenty of tips about cooking and eating pumpkins with recipes ideas on the website, too.

Prices of pumpkins range from 50p up to £5.  A range of squashes such as Harlequin, Crown Prince and Kabocha are also available.

Well behaved dogs are welcome, but not amongst the fruit and vegetables.

Riverford’s Plastic Free Pumpkin Day

#riverfordpumpkinday  @riverford  Riverford

Saturday 26th October from 11-4pm

It’s time for Riverford’s legendary annual Pumpkin Day. Pull on your wellies and head to Wash Farm for another festival of autumnal cheer! This year its plastic free!

A family favourite event with tickets selling out in advance, Riverford really know how to throw a celebration where everyone can have fun. Great activities for the kids to get involved with include, a creativity area, storytelling, face painting and of course pumpkin decorating– (as opposed to carved to avoid all the plastic tools).

There’s plenty for adults too – wander round the farm, hear Riverford founder Guy Singh-Watson and an expert panel debate ‘Eating for the Planet’ or pop along to Penny’s polytunnel for seed-potting and headdress-making workshops.

Live music will fill the air from Banned on the Moor and Stopmin Dave and fantastic organic seasonal food and drink (if you haven’t enjoyed a meal at Riverford you are in for a treat – it’s delicious!), so choose from the Farmers’ Market, The Riverford Field Kitchen or traders Beanbug Coffee and Lemon Jelli. This year, in the effort to be plastic free, all food and drink will be in 100% compostable containers or alternatively take water bottles, reusable cups, plates and cutlery or your Tupperware – Riverford would love it all.

All are welcome (it is not an exclusive event for Riverford customers), but it is ticketed so pre-buy tickets here.  Dogs are allowed on the farm too on a lead, but not inside the barn or restaurant.  And bring cash for refreshments and for some of the children’s activities such as face painting as there aren’t any card payment facilities or cash machines on site.
